Newton, MA (October 16, 2019)—A new research study published in The Journal of Pediatrics this week sheds light on which statewide birth hospital measures are associated with the greatest success in attaining the Surgeon General’s Healthy People 2020 breastfeeding objectives at 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge.
The study, led by Joel L. Bass, MD, Chair of Pediatrics at Newton-Wellesley Hospital; Tina Gartley, MD, Assistant Chair of Pediatrics at Newton-Wellesley Hospital; and Ronald Kleinman, MD, Physician-In-Chief, Mass General Hospital for Children, compared rates of statewide hospital breastfeeding initiation to statewide hospital Baby-Friendly designation using outcome data from the 2018 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Breastfeeding Report Card. The results demonstrated a highly significant correlation between statewide breastfeeding initiation rates and successful outcomes. Similar associations were not noted for Baby Friendly Designation penetrance.
The authors suggest that future public health efforts to promote breastfeeding should focus on the interaction of population demographics, individual hospital programs and public health strategies used to support breastfeeding in states reporting high breastfeeding initiation rates rather than the current emphasis on Baby-Friendly designation.
