Alex Hannenberg, MD, Becomes President of ASA




NEWTON, Mass. (November, 2009) – Alexander Hannenberg, MD, was recently installed as president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) during the organization’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Dr. Hannenberg is currently the associate chair of the Department of Anesthesia at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and a clinical professor of anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

As a member of the ASA since 1981, Dr. Hannenberg has served as the President-Elect (2009) and on ASA’s Executive Committee. He previously served four years as ASA’s Vice President for Professional Affairs with oversight of 12 ASA committees working in the areas of professional standards and professional practice including economics, government affairs, practice management, patient safety and professional liability. Dr. Hannenberg has previously served as chair of the ASA Committee on Economics and was a member of the ASA Board of Directors representing Massachusetts.

Dr. Hannenberg was responsible for the planning and development of the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI), created by the ASA to expand focus on patient health and safety by fostering advances in quality care measurement designed to lead to improvements in the delivery of anesthesia medical care.

Involved in the medical community beyond the ASA, Dr. Hannenberg currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the Foundation for Anesthesia Research & Education and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation. He is a past president of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists.

Past President of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Medical Staff and a current member of the Hospital’s Board of Overseers, Dr. Hannenberg has been involved in a variety of hospital committees over the years and also championed the idea for Newton-Wellesley’s Marathon Injury Clinic in conjunction with the Boston Athletic Association, which has been successfully evaluating and treating marathon runners free of charge for the last eight years.

After receiving his undergraduate education at Vassar College and his medical degree at Tufts University, Dr. Hannenberg completed an internship in medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Boston and a residency at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital (Harvard Medical School) where he served as chief resident. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Hannenberg and his wife Carol, also a physician, live in Wellesley and have two daughters.
