William B. Holgerson, MD, Receives Thier Physician Leadership Award
Bill Holgerson, MD, Medical Director of the Newton-Wellesley Physician Hospital Organization, (NWPHO) was awarded the Samuel O. Their, MD Physician Leadership Award by Partner’s Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI) at Partners Physician Day on February 7, 2009.
The Physician Leadership Award is named for Samuel O. Their, MD, who served as President and CEO of Partners HealthCare System from 1996-2000, and CEO of the Massachusetts General Hospital for the four years prior to that. This award is given annually by PCHI to a physician who inspires colleagues, makes things happen, takes on leadership tasks when the plate is already full, and has the vision to help chart the future.
Bill has served in a number of leadership positions within the Newton-Wellesley system. Bill is currently an Overseer and a past Trustee of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Board of Directors, and has served on numerous standing committees of the Newton-Wellesley Medical Staff. Bill was elected to the Board of the Newton-Wellesley Physician Hospital Organization in 1994, becoming the Chair of this Board in November 1997 and continuing in that leadership position until December 2004. In January 2005, Bill was appointed Medical Director of the NWPHO, the position he continues to hold today.
Bill has also served in numerous leadership positions within the Partners Health Care System since 1999 when the NWPHO became an affiliate of PCHI, serving on the PCHI Managed Care Contracts Committee from 1999-2004, the PCHI/PHS Physician Fee Council from 2004-present and on the PCHI Medical Management Committee since January 2005 until the present.
Bill’s interest in information technology has made him a key contributor to the Network’s development of its electronic medical record (EMR) strategy including serving on the original EMR Task Force in 2002-2003, serving as a member of the LMR Advisory Committee since its inception 2004, and most recently serving on the Technology Integration Workgroup that met during 2008 to define the future technology vision for PHS.
As a clinically active PCP with a panel of 6000 patients, Bill has been instrumental in helping PCHI develop and evaluate its medical management strategies and programs. In addition to his work on the Medical Management Committee, Bill has served on the PCHI Visiting Committee, the PCHI Performance Management Committee and the Systems Improvement Grant (SIGP) Review Committee. In all these roles, Bill has brought tremendous insight and a common sense approach to establishing realistic goals for the Network and in designing useful clinical programs that can be effectively adopted by our physician practices.
