Physician Organization Consulting Engagement The NWPHO and NWH have jointly engaged a consulting group to work with us on developing a conceptual design of a potential new Physician Organization here at Newton-Wellesley that could accommodate the gradual migration of independent physician practices to such an organization over an anticipated 2-10 year timeframe. This is a continuation of the exploration that began with physician and hospital leadership retreat at Babson College in November 2006 and subsequently involved a discussion with a Chicago based law firm as to whether a clinically integrated organizational strategy would be sufficient to ensure a vibrant medical community for the years ahead. This analysis concluded that the clinical integration model did not adequately address core issues related to physician recruitment and growth, practice management support and leadership, service orientation as to where ancillary services should be located, and system/network influence among others. Based on this exploration and further discussion, our leadership group has determined that a more economically integrated organization is likely the most viable option for the future. This engagement with Health Care Futures, a Minneapolis based firm with extensive experience working with physician groups and health care systems will help establish an organizational framework from existing models that can then be reviewed and assessed by our physician constituency. No commitment to form a PO has been made at this time, but it was felt that having a more concrete model that would delineate the organizational and governance structures, funds flow models for revenue and expenses and potential compensation models was a necessary next step in helping make a determination as to whether to proceed down this path. As part of the engagement, Health Care Futures will be interviewing approximately 35 members of our medical staff along with NWPHO and Hospital leadership. The consultants will be guided by a 9 person project team comprised of Physician and Hospital leadership. Questions regarding the goals of this engagement can be directed to Alex Hannenberg, MD, NWPHO Chair, Jeff Murphy, NWPHO Executive Director, Dan Gross, NWH Sr. Vice President for Finance or Greg Pauly, NWH Vice President for Professional Development and Business Planning. |
