Medical Staff Accomplishments - March/April 2010Hubert Caplan, MD, Rheumatology, was named the Charles River District Medical Society’s “Community Clinician of the Year.” This award, given by the Massachusetts Medical Society through its District Medical Societies, recognizes a physician who has made significant contributions to patients and the community and who stands out as a leading advocate and caregiver.Robert Dickman, MD, recently announced his retirement. He has played a major role in the development of family medicine and geriatrics in this country. Dr. Dickman was part of the initial working group that developed the discipline of geriatrics. He has helped develop and work with residency programs in several states. Locally, he held the inaugural Jaharis family Chair of Family Medicine at Tufts. Through his leadership, Tufts Family Medicine grew from a small division he helped to start in 1998, to a major clinical department in the medical school. In May 2001, he came to NWH as the inaugural Chair of Family Medicine - a position he held though 2005. Dr. Dickman has helped to care for tens of thousands of patients in his more than 40 years in practice. He will continue to see patients at NWH until June 30. Mark Drapkin, MD, Infectious Diseases, was selected by the senior class of Tufts University School of Medicine as a recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award. The award will be presented at the Senior Dinner in May. Anthony J. Guidi, MD, GI, was appointed as the new Chair of Pathology by the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Board of Trustees, upon recommendation of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff. He started April 1 and serves as successor to Dennis Feen, MD. Dr. Guidi was identified by a Search Committee from among a highly competitive group of pathologists seeking the Chair position. Dr. Guidi had previously served as Chair of the Pathology Department at North Shore Medical Center since 2001. He developed numerous collaborative efforts with other Medical Staff Departments at North Shore and was driven towards clinical excellence. Bruce Leslie, MD, had a paper published in the Journal of Hand Surgery on the “Effectiveness of MRI in diagnosing distal biceps tendon ruptures”. The paper reviewed the MRI scans of 50 patients treated at NWH. The study looked at the accuracy of the MRI in diagnosing both partial and complete distal biceps tendon rupture.
Eugenia Marcus, MD, has been honored by the state medical society as the 2010 recipient of its Award for Distinguished Service to the Massachusetts Medical Society. The award recognizes a member physician who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the goals of the Medical Society through leadership and committee work. She will receive the honor, one of the organizations’ most prestigious, at the Society’s annual meeting May 13 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston.
Lucy Paniszyn, MD, Primary Care Physician, received the Primary Care Award for Teaching and Mentoring at the Annual Primary Care Physician Recognition Dinner sponsored by Partners Healthcare System, Inc. The dinner was attended by several hundred physicians from throughout Partners. |
