Special Care Nursery
Newton-Wellesley Hospital's pediatric occupational therapist works closely with nursing, physical therapy, physicians and families to best address the individualized needs of infants in our Special Care Nursery.
After completing an initial evaluation of the infant’s developmental milestones and needs, our pediatric occupational therapist uses her expertise in neonatal development to support the infant and parents in the context of the hospital environment. Occupational therapy may address the infant’s needs for musculoskeletal development, sensory regulation, feeding, visual attention and tracking, cognitive development and parent-infant interaction and bonding.
Parent education is a key component of occupational therapy, with particular focus on developmental care, feeding needs, infant massage, or managing infant care in conjunction with sibling demands at home. Referrals to early intervention programs are made regularly to ensure ongoing support for the infant’s development in the context of the family and to assist with the transition home.
