Orthopaedic Surgery Service

The Orthopaedic Surgery Service is one of Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s largest clinical services. Patients of all ages including newborn babies, children, adults and, the geriatric population with disorders of the musculoskeletal system are treated by highly skilled, compassionate orthopaedists and orthopaedic surgeons using state-of-the-art technology.

Conditions Treated
Serving communities throughout Greater Boston area, including Newton, Wellesley, Framingham, Natick, Dedham, Waltham and Watertown, our orthopaedic specialists are trained to treat a wide array of conditions, including:

• arthritis
• sports injuries
• fractures
• congenital deformities
• repetitive stress disorders
• back injuries
• work-related injuries
• bone tumors

The Service is involved in teaching orthopaedic residents from the New England Medical Center Hospital. In addition, medical students from Tufts University School of Medicine, and physician assistant students from several schools receive critical clinical experiences on the orthopaedic service.

Our Team
The Service is comprised of general orthopaedists, sports medicine specialists, spine specialists, bone tumor specialist, podiatrists, and hand surgery specialists. All are board certified in their fields.

General orthopaedists care for virtually all problems of the skeleton from the neck to the feet. This includes conditions of the neck, shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, back, pelvis, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Some of the common procedures performed include total joint replacement in the  hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow, arthroscopic surgery in the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle,  and cervical and lumbar disc surgery.

Sports Medicine
Newton-Wellesley’s sports medicine specialists treat a large volume of sports-related injuries. They work with high school, college, professional, and weekend athletes, and are available seven days a week. They offer state-of-the art outpatient surgical treatment using regional anesthesia for conditions of the shoulder, elbow,  wrist, hand, knee,  ankle and foot.

Hand Surgery
The hand surgery specialists affiliated with Newton-Wellesley make up one of the largest hand surgery services in New England. They provide care for conditions from the elbow to the fingertip. Common problems treated include: fractures, joint injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, tendonitis, trauma, vascular conditions - such as Raynaud’s disease - and congenital deformities.

Interdisciplinary Team
The Orthopaedic Service enjoys a close professional relationship with the Hospital’s rheumatologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and hand therapists.

The expertise of the Pain Management Clinic is also available to patients if indicated.

Podiatry
Podiatrists are available to evaluate and treat problems of the feet, including arthritis, bunions, hammer toes, tendonitis, diabetic foot problems, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, conditions of the toes, common runner’s injuries and sports injuries. Custom foot orthotics are often part of the conservative treatment plan for many of these conditions.

All Newton-Wellesely affiliated Podiatrists have extensive experience in reconstructive foot surgery. The Cambridge Health Alliance, a highly sought after podiatric residency, rotates second and third year residents to Newton-Wellesley Hospital as part of their training.
