Adult Inpatient Medicine (Hospitalist Service)Steven Pestka, MD, Chief Availability: On site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Hospitalists are board certified (or board eligible) Internal Medicine physicians who specialize in the care of acutely ill medical patients admitted to the hospital. Hospitalists have experience in a broad range of medical problems and are expert in managing care within the hospital setting. At Newton-Wellesley, our hospitalists are focused on providing high quality, compassionate care to each patient. We accomplish this by making ourselves available to patients and families throughout the day and night and through involvement in improving systems of care within our hospital. A hospitalist will be charged with the care of a patient either because the primary care doctor does not admit to Newton-Wellesley or because the primary care doctor has requested our services. In fact, more than 90% of medical patients admitted to Newton-Wellesley are cared for by hospitalists. Hospitalists communicate with primary care physicians to ensure seamless transition of care during and after hospital discharge. Our hospitalists are clinician-educators with a mission to train medical students, interns, and residents through direct supervision of patient care, teaching rounds, and lectures. Hospitalists direct the care of patients on both the non-housestaff and housestaff-covered services. The Hospitalist Service is available to admit patients through the Emergency Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and to provide medical consultation to other inpatient services (including General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology). |
