Office Sterilization (Essure)
Serving Greater Boston communities, the center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) at Newton-Wellesley Hospital offers Essure®, an office sterilization procedure, to our patients.
What is Essure?>
Essure® is hysteroscopic tubal occlusion, a female sterilization option that can be competed in the office without any incisions. A hysteroscope, a thin tube containing a video camera, is inserted through the vagina into the cervix and uterus. A small coil is then placed in each fallopian tube. These coils stay in the fallopian tubes and cause the tubes to close completely off, resulting in permanent contraception.
An X-ray test is performed three months after the coils are in place to confirm that the tubes are closed. Essure® can be performed in the office or in the operating room with anesthesia.
