At the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital we emphasize that bariatric surgery is not a cure for obesity. However, we do believe that it is an effective way to reduce excess weight and control the serious conditions that result from obesity. We work closely with our patients, who come to us from Greater Boston and all of New England, to find out what surgical approach will work best for their health and what to consider when choosing to have bariatric surgery.
When bariatric surgery is the best option for a patient, the Laparoscopic or Minimally Invasive Surgery procedures we perform include
Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y)
Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery
Laparoscopic Removal of Adjustable Gastric Band
Laparoscopic Conversion of Adjustable Gastric Band to Sleeve Gastrectomy or to Gastric Bypass
Whenever possible, our bariatric surgeons will employ laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, surgery to reduce recovery times.
We do not offer our patients malabsorptive procedures, such as Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD), which can cause severe vitamin deficiency and diarrhea. And we do not offer purely restrictive procedures, such as the Laparoscopic Gastric Bands (lap bands) or Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, because of their higher risks and poor weight loss outcomes long term.
