Exercise and Fitness Classes

The Wellness Center exercise and fitness classes are designed to accommodate various levels and abilities. Our instructors are always happy to suggest ways of adapting any class or workout to meet your individual needs.
You may register for any class at any time during the session, and the price of the class will be adjusted accordingly.
Classes will either be held on the Newton-Wellesley Hospital campus or at nearby Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington Street, Newton.
Parking for classes held at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is available for a nominal fee in either of our Patient/Visitor Parking Garages. Free parking is available for classes held at Temple Reyim.
Refunds/Credits: Refunds/credits are given for medical reasons documented by a physician only and are subject to a $25 processing fee.
Insurance Reimbursement: Some insurance plans reimburse the cost of exercise and wellness programs. Ask your insurance provider about coverage.

Low Impact Aerobics
Boost your energy and improve heart function, all while preventing bone-loss and reducing stress. All levels and ages welcome; our instructors can help you adapt the workout to fit individual needs. Class consists of a ten minute warm up, followed by a cardio-aerobic session based on dance moves (no dance experience required). (Monday/Wednesday)

Fit & Fabulous
Live healthy and feel better! For active, mature individuals who want to improve their strength, balance and posture. Class includes a warm up, a slower paced aerobics and a strength training routine that promotes total body well being. Focus is on improving strength and improving balance. (Tuesday/Thursday) |

Core & More/Pilates
Non areobicPilates mat (floor) exercises. It’s great for all ages and aerobic abilities. Focus is on building core, lower back, glute and thigh strength. Participants should wear loose clothing, no shoes are required and you may bring your own yoga mat or use the mats provided. All levels and ages welcome. (Saturdays) |

Pilates with Strength Training
This class focuses on the abdominal area, low back, buttocks and thighs. Improve balance and posture while also increasing muscle strength through Pilates exercises. Weights and other props are added for stregth training. Great for all ages and abilities.(Tuesday/Thursday) |

Step & Stretch
Aerobic class based on dance moves incorporating a step combined with a non-aerobic routine of strength building exercises. For all ages and abilities, no dance experience required Focus is on improving heart function and increasing muscle strength.(Tuesday/Thursday) |

At the Wellness Center, we offer Kundalini Yoga. Kundalini Yoga is a lifelong yoga practice suitable for people of all ages and fitness abilities who are looking to reduce stress and improve their overall health and well-being.
The focus in Kundalini Yoga is on the health and vitality of the participant, and not on the participant's physical performance of the practice. Kundalini Yoga helps participants achieve sound body and mind through yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. Kundalini Yoga practice promotes mental clarity, physical well-being, relaxation, stress management, and creativity.
The yoga teachers at the Wellness Center meet the National Yoga Alliance standards for yoga teachers in the US.

Mommy & Baby Yoga
This class is designed to help new moms reduce stress and improve overall health and well-being, while connecting with their new babies and meeting other new moms. Throughout this 5-week session moms will build strength, reclaim their body and learn techniques to achieve sound body and mind. Babies will be incorporated into the class through massage and gentle yoga stretches. This class is appropriate for infants, ages 6 weeks to crawling. |

American Heart Association First Aid
Covers topics such as heart attack, stroke, shock, head injury, wounds, nosebleeds, fractures, muscle injury, poisons, drowning, insect bites, bandages and dressings. Briefly reviews skills in CPR and Heimlich maneuver. Participants will receive American Heart Association two year certification.

CPR for Family & Friends
This is an American Heart Association informational course teaching the basic skills of CPR for infants/children and adults and how to help an infant, child or adult who is choking. This course does not provide official CPR certification and is appropriate for parents, grandparents, family members, babysitters and other lay rescuers. Free manual.

Heartsaver CPR/AED
This course is designed to teach the skills of CPR and foreign body airway obstruction for the infant, child and adult, and provide instruction in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Appropriate for day care providers, office employees, nannies, security professionals or other lay rescuers. Participants receive certificates by mail. Revised AHA manuals are available for purchase. Participants will receive official certification from the American Heart Association. Certification is good for two years. This course is NOT appropriate for health care providers! HealthCare Provider CPR (BLS - Basic Life Support)
HealthCare Provider CPR is for medical and allied health professionals. This class includes adult, child and infant CPR, as well as two-person CPR, ambu bag use and instruction in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Reiki 1 Workshop
This workshop covers the benefits, uses and history of the Usui Reiki System. Participants receive a Reiki attunement to enhance their ability to transmit life force energy through their hands. Includes instruction and practice time using all hand positions for giving and receiving a complete Reiki treatment on self, family and friends. Participants will receive certification as a Reiki 1 Practitioner upon course completion. Taught by Wendy Caves, RN, BA, Reiki Master/Teacher.

Reiki 3/Master Workshop
For those who have completed both Reiki 1 and Reiki 2. In this workshop you will deepen your understanding of Reiki. Participants will become attuned to the Reiki Master symbol and learn how to do Reiki treatments using the Reiki Master symbol. Participants will learn how to do Reiki attunements to others and will also learn how to make Reiki water. The important aspects of having a Reiki business will also be discussed. | Tobacco Cessation |

Smoking Cessation Support Group
Join a FREE quit smoking program that meets for an hour each week for six weeks in a caring and encouraging group format. Each week you will be given concrete strategies to use on working toward your goal of tobacco-free living. Everyone is encouraged to share his or her personal challenges and triumphs weekly. Together, the group will develop an understanding of the dynamics of tobacco addiction and the ability to choose alternative behaviors to tobacco use. The role of nutrition and healthy habits is covered as well as goal-setting and follow-through. The group is facilitated by a Licensed Social Worker who has been trained as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Group members are encouraged to discuss tobacco treatment medicines with their Primary Care Providers in addition to this behavior modification program.
