About the Center
Orthopaedic surgery is one of Newton-Wellesley’s largest clinical services. Its sports medicine specialists treat athletes of all ability levels, from youth and "weekend warriors," to professionals. General orthopaedic care is available for virtually all skeletal problems from the neck to the feet. Hand surgery specialists can provide care for conditions from the elbows to the tips of the fingers.

Our Team

Our Orthopaedic Service is supported by the hospital’s state-of-the-art Radiology Department, Rehabilitation Services Department and Pain Management Clinic if needed.

We perform more than 4,000 surgical procedures every year and our orthopaedic surgeons have extensive training and experience and are board certified in their fields. Working in partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, Newton-Wellesley Hospital is an official medical provider of The Boston Marathon providing pre and post-marathon services to athletes participating in the event.

Our Facilities
Our Joint Center surgeons use state-of-the-art laminar flow operating rooms designed to increase patient-centered care and successful outcomes. We also use the latest tools and technology, such as computer-navigated/computer-assisted surgery, and offer sophisticated, minimally invasive procedures like total joint arthroscopy and joint resurfacing.

Our facilities allow us to provide conservative muscle and bone-sparing techniques and new, improved pain management methods that result in easier, faster recovery from joint repair and replacement.

For example, arthroscopy - a minimally invasive procedure - is an alternative to open surgery and involves smaller incisions and decreased recovery time. Various other minimally invasive surgical techniques are used to provide more outpatient procedures, shorter inpatient stays and faster return to regular activities.

The Hospital also offers 24-hour emergency services at the Maxwell Blum Emergency Pavilion  to care for orthopaedic injuries and conditions. The Pavilion has its own Radiology Imaging Suite which includes two digital X-ray rooms and a 64-slice CT scanner.

Collaboration
The procedures performed at the Center are tracked and studied through the Massachusetts General Hospital Joint Registry in order to provide patients and referring physicians with the most current data about various treatments and procedures.

Patients also have access to a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic technology and treatment options from physicians with significant expertise in the field of orthopaedics.

Surgeons at the Center work with multidisciplinary support teams at Newton-Wellesley including Radiology, Rehabilitation Services, Physical Therapy, Infectious Disease, Physiatry, Intensivists and Hospitalists to effectively and efficiently provide high-quality care.
