Pre-Diabetes
What is Pre-Diabetes?
In pre diabetes, blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be characterized as diabetes. However, many people with pre diabetes develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Pre-diabetes also increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. With modest weight loss and moderate physical activity, people with pre diabetes can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
Who is at risk for pre diabetes?
- Overweight
- Age greater than 45
- Family history
- Giving birth to large baby
- Lack of exercise-sedentary lifestyle
- History of Gestational Diabetes
Diagnostic Blood Tests:
Fasting Blood Glucose: results 100-125 OR
Oral glucose tolerance test: MD will discuss results with you
Treatment:
- Weight Loss: 5-10% of total body weight
- Nutrition: Do not skip meals. Eat 3 meals/per day and nutritious snacks. Eat in food combinations- carbohydrate with a protein, add choose high fiber carbohydrates.
- Blood Glucose Testing: Check blood glucose first thing in the morning before food and 2 hours after a meal and record in logbook.
- Goals: Fasting blood glucose: less than 120 2 hours after a meal: less than 150
- Exercise: Increasing your daily physical activity helps decrease weight and blood glucose
Expectations: In order to make best use of your appointment time, please bring a written or printed record of your blood glucose and dietary record.
